Q: The garbage
can smells so good, but my
humans get upset when I take stuff out of it.
Why?
A: Your humans have your best interest at heart. They
know what they have put in the garbage can, which is
often smelly, stinky and wonderfully putrid items. Our
noses are so much more sensitive than our humans – so
they often don’t understand why it smells so good. It
would be comparable to an all you can eat buffet for our
humans. Often though, many of the items in the garbage
are unsafe for us to eat – like chicken wing bones, fatty
parts of meat they didn’t eat, used Kleenex, cleaning
supply containers, etc. That’s why they get so upset when
we start helping ourselves to the “buffet”. They know
that
some items in the garbage could make us very sick. They
are trying to keep us healthy and out of the vet’s office
for
emergencies like eating a chicken wing bone that gets
stuck and requires surgery to remove.
The best thing your humans can do is make sure that the
garbage can has a secure lid we can’t open easily or is
placed in an out of reach area or behind a door. My
humans actually put our garbage can in a closet because it
was so irresistible to Apollo that he actually broke the lid
trying to get into it!
When humans apply common sense to matters like this,
the solution is simple. By making sure we can’t get to the
garbage, we can’t raid the garbage and we won’t get
sick!
